Dandruff is problem that many people suffer from. It can be caused due to a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis or even due to dry scalp. It can be caused due to many other reasons too, like psoriasis, eczema or even a very common overgrowth of a yeasty fungus known as malassezia. Most of the remedies for dandruff available in the drugstore include shampoos containing zinc pyrithione as it targets bacteria and fungus which causes dandruff, ketoconazole, selenium sulphide reduces the growth of dead skin cells on the scalp, coal tar and also salicylic acid that loosen up the flakes so that they can be washed away easily.
These shampoos are found to be quite effective for removing dandruff and are now available in many forms. You can find dandruff shampoo for oily hair and dry hair even. Continued use of these shampoos can help remove dandruff permanently. But you can also opt for a number of home remedies which can effectively remove dandruff in an easy and cost effective way. Here are a few of the home remedies:
- Aspirin– aspirin contains salicylic acid which is one of the main ingredients of the drugstore shampoos used for dandruff. You can reduce the amount of flakes on your head by mixing two aspirins in the powdered form with your regular shampoo. Use this mixture to wash your hair regularly. While washing keep this mixture on your hair for one to two minutes and then again wash your hair with normal shampoo.
- Tea tree oil– in a research it was found that those shampoos which contained just five percent of tea tree oil in it were able to significantly improve dandruff. If you do not have such a shampoo then you can take your favourite shampoo and add a few drops of the essential oil to it. Wash your hair with this to reduce dandruff related problems.
- Baking soda– if the other products get too difficult for you to obtain, then this is your best option. Baking soda is very easily available and almost all kitchens have it stocked. It is a common and very effective remedy for flake free and itch free scalp. You just need to wet your hair and then rub baking soda on your scalp vigorously. Rinse it straightaway without using shampoo. You hair might get pretty dry at first, but after a few weeks your hair will get back its natural shine as your scalp will start producing natural oils again.
- Apple cider vinegar– this is a well known remedy for dandruff as the acid changes the pH of the scalp. This makes it difficult for the yeast to grow and cause dandruff. Mix quarter cup of both apple cider vinegar and water and spray it on your scalp. Cover your head with a towel and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then wash your hair like usual. Doing this twice a week will leave you with dandruff free hair.
For others who don’t want to go through all the trouble can also use Ketomac shampoo to get rid of dandruff easily and quickly.
